Our
District is a pilot district for a Rotary Ethics Initiative
in cooperation with the Josephson Institute, which is well
recognized for its ethics training, especially with young
people. You may be familiar with their program in schools,
Character Counts. The Rotary Ethics Initiative began in
response to a survey conducted by the Josephson Institute in
2006. Josephson surveyed 36,000 high school students and
found that while the students felt that ethics were
important and while they felt they were ethical, they also
admitted, for example, to having cheated on tests or lied in
a significant way to teachers or parents; they all stated
they believed that people 'did whatever was needed to win.'
The Ethics Initiative was created to help close that gap
between believing in ethics, feeling ethical and actually
being ethical, making ethical decisions and understanding
ethical leadership.
Goals for 2009-10 For the Ethics Initiative for District
5190
1) Get at least one person in each Area trained in the
Ethics Initiative so that they are able to make a club
presentation to each club in their Area to create awareness
and interest in the Ethics Initiative.
- Work on what would be presented during this training, and
a plan for the club presentation
- Work with District Trainers on dates for Train the
Trainer to see if we can use these trained presenters to
help accomplish this goal
- Consider meetings in four locations to get the message
out ( Auburn , Reno , Elko/Winnemucca, Susanville/Alturas)
- Focus on a facilitative approach to the training and the
planned presentation
2) Using Josephson matrix, roll out the Ethics materials to
Interact clubs (and YouthAct?)
- Consider adding this training and information to the
meetings in four locations along with goal number 1
- Consider how to customize the materials so modules can be
done in small time segments of 15-20 minutes
- What other ways can we get Interact folks trained and
engaged
3) Enhance and expand the Ethics Initiative at RYLA
- See how we can have even more impact in the same amount
of time
4) Use Ethics Initiative as keystone of Youth Track at the
District Conference
- Consider if we can train Interact advisors in Ethics
Initiative while they are at the District Conference
5) Ethics activities for use by Rotarians/individual clubs
- DG to emphasize ethics as a priority clubs (i.e. in
speaking to clubs and encouraging 4-way test spoken at each
club meeting)
- Include Ethics overview as a club program (see train the
trainer above)
- Include Ethics activities as part of the call for
recognition under Vocational Services
- Include Ethics Materials on D5190 Website
- Activities that clubs can implement or use
during their meetings like moral dilemmas
- Apple Dumpling book information
- Ethics Program Overview from Youth Services
Seminar on 07/11/2009
