Rotary
seeks Young Ambassadors
NOTE: The Group Study
Exchage information below is from last year. Information and
forms for the 2011 Group Study Exchage will be posted when
it becomes available.
Rotary District 5190 is currently accepting applications
for the 2010 Group Study Exchange to India, January 18, 2010
to February 17, 2010.
Group Study Exchange is one of the programs funded by the
Rotary Foundation. Its purpose is to promote understanding
and goodwill throughout the world. Group Study Exchange team
members travel in a group of four with a Rotarian Team
Leader. During the month long visit to India, they will be
exposed to culture, cuisine, history and business aspects of
Rotary District 3201 in India which is located in the
southern tip of India, and encompasses two Indian States,
Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Through the program, teams of young professionals from two
different countries exchange visits. For four to six weeks,
team members experience the way of life, customs, and
vocational practices of another country, while sharing
information about their homeland.
The purpose of the Group Study Exchange program is to
promote international understanding and goodwill through
personal connection. While abroad, team members stay in
Rotarians' homes and have the opportunity to meet their
professional counterparts. They also give presentations to
Rotary clubs and other groups about their home country
The Rotary Foundation pays for round-trip airfare, and
Rotary club members in the host country provide meals,
lodging, and group travel in their district. Team members
pay for personal and incidental expenses.
Young adults between the ages of 25 and 40 who are
interested in applying should be employed full-time in a
business or profession. Applicants must live or be employed
in Rotary District 5190 (which includes north-eastern
California and northern Nevada).
Team members are provided an orientation prior to their
departure. There is also a requirement that presentations
about their journey are given to their home communities upon
their return to the U.S. Where else can you find an all
expense paid trip to another country where you will get the
experience of a life time? Rotary Group Study Exchange is a
chance you won't want to miss.

Inbound Team Update
The Italians are Coming! The Italians are Coming!
On April 17 the Group Study Exchange team from Italy will
be arriving in Reno to begin their exchange with District
5190. District Governor Wyn has arranged for an exchange
this year with District 2090, a district that encompasses an
area in central eastern Italy and a portion of Albania. Our
district will be sending a team led by Shawn Rowles, a past
president of the Tahoe Douglas Rotary Club, to District 2090
later in May for a one month exchange to that beautiful,
historical part of the world. We know our district will do
its usual superlative job of hosting the inbound team and
showing them the warm welcome and exciting vocational and
recreational activities our clubs have always done.
The Group Study Exchange (GSE) program of the Rotary
Foundation of Rotary International is a unique cultural and
vocational exchange opportunity for young business and
professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 in
the initial years of their professional life. The program
provides travel grants for teams of participants to exchange
visits between paired areas in different countries. For one
month team members study the host country's institutions and
ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced
abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and
exchange ideas. It is highly competitive and a singular
honor to be chosen to participate in this international
program. We can expect the visiting team members to be
outstanding representatives of their country and of their
vocations. The team typically consists of four young
professionals (who cannot be in Rotary) and one team leader
who is an experienced Rotarian. We are informed that all of
the inbound team members speak English, but ask that any of
you who speak with them remember to speak slowly and
distinctly to aid them in better understanding.
TEAM LEADER
The Italian team will be led by Mauro Bignami who
is sponsored by the Ancona Conero Rotary Club. Mauro holds a
degree in Political Science from the Universita la Sapienza
of Rome and is a leader in the Italian marketing and
management field. He also teaches principles of
International marketing and communication. In 1996 he won
the prestigious Luigi Albertini national prize of
journalism. He joined Rotary in 1992 and has serve his club
as director, secretary and president (1999-2000). He has
also served as an Assistant Governor, district press agent,
district webmaster and much, much more.

The GSE program enhances the international perspective of
the next generation of young leaders that will lead our
future. We expect the program will foster a creative
approach to problem solving by expanding the team members'
skills, exposure to alternate methodologies and preparation
for addressing community needs. We enthusiastically welcome
them to our district and look forward to meeting new friends
that will assist us in reaching one of Rotary's main goals
of building relationships among the people of this world to
enhance the possibility of peace among nations. Please join
DG Wyn in making their exchange the experience of a
lifetime. |
