"Our" Rotary Peace
Fellow - Alejandra Rueda
Since
our District is participating in the World Peace Fellows program
we have the opportunity of being a host counselor for one of the
fellows who is attending the program at the University of
California in Berkeley, California. Our role as a counselor is
to provide guidance and to allow our fellows to be more involved
with Rotary projects and activities.
Our World Peace Fellow is Alejandra Rueda, who is from
Colombia. She studied economics and has a postgraduate degree in
financial and marketing management.
Before she began her fellowship program, Alejandra had been
working for the last 7 years in the Colombian oil palm sector
concentrating on two projects. The first project created new
opportunities for peasants affected by violence in Colombia. 300
families were given the opportunity to become landowners through
a socially and environmentally sustainable model with government
financial aid and private commitment. At present more than 2400
individuals from 600 families have joined similar schemes around
the country.
Alejandra's second project was developing the National
Sustainable Biofuel Program as a key for agricultural expansion
and economic growth. Work stability in the countryside is
assured by a demand of feedstock for bioenergy which gives the
opportunity to displaced people to come back to their land.
At the University of California, Berkeley, Alejandra is
pursuing a master's in Energy and Resources focused on rural
development in a post social conflict stage in Columbia.
We will keep you informed about Alejandra's progress and look
forward to her attendance at a district event in the future.
